Manoocher Deghati

Manoocher Deghati is not just a photojournalist: he is a witness of our time. For over four decades, his camera has crossed borders and conflicts, capturing with empathy and rigor the faces of history, the wounds of humanity, and the fragments of beauty that resist, even under the bombs.

It all began in 1979, with the Iranian Revolution. It is there, in the heart of his country, that Manoocher starts documenting reality with an urgency that will never leave him. The Iran-Iraq war, forced exile in 1985, then missions in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East: every place narrated by Deghati becomes a visual chronicle of the struggle between oppression and freedom.

He has worked for international agencies such as Sipa, Black Star, AFP, and for the United Nations. He was the photography director for the Associated Press in the Middle East and has signed reports for legendary publications such as National Geographic, TIME, Life, Newsweek and GEO. His name is etched in the history of photojournalism.

In 2002, driven by the desire to pass on knowledge, he founded the AINA Photojournalism Institute in Kabul, giving voice to a new generation of Afghan photojournalists. His legacy, however, is not just made of images: it’s made of stories, encounters, twists of fate, and truths that surpass fiction.

The book EYEWITNESS, curated by Sarah Leen (former photography director of National Geographic) and published by FotoEvidence, is a powerful testimony of this extraordinary life. With 130 iconic photographs and a biography as intense as a novel, the volume – available in French, English, German, Italian (HO VISTO) and Persian – invites us to look at the world through the eyes of someone who has truly seen. And continues to see.
